LIBE 477 Future Vision Blog Post #2: Learner Considerations
For my 477 Future Vision Project I am going to be making Library Guides for the e-resources that are offered through my District Learning Commons. I am going to target intermediate science resources first and then, if there is time, do intermediate socials resources as well. I would like to have a document that has a quick guide reference at the beginning of which resources would fit which curricular outcomes so that the teachers can glance and see what may help them, followed by more in depth advertisement-like info pages showing what the resource has to offer. Ideally I will also make a quick login reference sheet that they could copy and use with students to get them logged in to the resource. This way when teachers are planning their units and having students do research they will be able to tell quickly and efficiently what resources would be useful. I will also look into having shortcut buttons to e-resources added to the student desktops to save confusion about access.
I anticipate challenges in regards to the time that this project will take. I know that it will take a long time to explore the resources and build the documents even if they look deceptively simple when I am done. Ideally, I would like to have lib guides for all grades and subjects, but I think that is too big of a scope to handle. I am hoping that when I share this out it will inspire other TLs to assist in the creation of a collection of documents because I also have other goals for my lib spaces (collection curation at one building and physical space overhaul at the other). I am also worried that after all of the time and energy I put in, classroom teachers will put it aside and forget about it when it is time to do their projects. I will try to insert myself into these projects so that I can demonstrate and show what resources are available, but that isn't always possible. (Especially when I am split between two buildings.)
I will be sharing my creation within the building by distributing the document to classroom teachers both physically and electronically, by going over the resource in staff meetings, and by collaborating with teachers on incorporating these e-resources into their teaching. I will also be sharing these with the Teacher-Librarian group on our Office 365 team page, in our monthly PGDTLA meeting, and hopefully they will get added to the DLC webpage under Lib Guides.
Excellent considerations of your audience and what they would find most useful and helpful in their daily teaching and lessons. A good discussion of the potential challenges, as well as concerns with time, implementation and interactivity. Good plan for sharing this lib-guide with your staff, both for highlighting and demonstrating effective use. Plan on making this an ongoing project that goes beyond this course and diploma and can grow and include more subjects and resources as you are able to explore them. Overall, good planning post and lots of good considerations.
