LIBE 467 Final Post: The Reference Section

Image
The Reference Section: LIBE 467 Final Blog post Andrea Koehn                 When someone mentions the reference section of the library I still picture a dusty shelf with an old dictionary, some torn atlases and an out of date encyclopedia set. Even though I know that the section encompasses so much more than anthologies and indexes, that is still the first picture in my mind. Even though we have discussed digital resources for weeks my brain still wants to separate digital resources from print resources. Things like Nat Geo Kids or Kids Britannica online feel like a completely different entity and separated from the ratty magazines and old encyclopedias that we had when I was growing up. I think it is due to the interactive elements of the digital reference resources as well as their large capacity.                  When I started the course I thought tha...

LIBE 467 Assignment 3

LIBE 467 Assignment #3 Evaluation Plan Andrea Koehn   1.        Analysis of the Reference Collection: The school in question is a K-7 school that has been an operating school since 1969. It used to have a larger student population (up to 400 students) but has maintained a student population around 200 for the last decade. Because of its age, the library collection can be out of date. Even though most of the main collection has been curated and maintained, the printed reference materials are on average, 30-40 years old. They have been stored in a back room and were covered by other teaching materials and are not well used.   Below is a breakdown of the print materials that are currently in the collection.                   Less than half of the printed reference materials are located on the reference shelf in the library collection due to the age ...

LIBE 467 Assignment 2: Collaboration

Collaborating with Teachers C.L.A. Leading Learning, 2014. http://llsop.canadianschoollibraries.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/llsop.pdf                 Part of the role of a Teacher Librarian is to facilitate collaboration.   As shown in the figure above, the Canadian Librarian Association puts emphasis on the role of the T.L. in facilitating collaboration and co-planning and co-teaching. The document is called Leading Learning, but my interpretation of that is that T.L.s lead the learning of the students and the school community, not necessarily of the Teachers. We collaborate with teachers and staff to create meaningful learning for the student population. During collaboration, and our practice in general, there is often also a lot of personal learning that happens. As a T.L., working with peers to design, plan, and implement innovative activities, lessons, and projects is a big and enjoyable p...

Managing and Evaluating Reference Services (Theme 2 LIBE 467)

Image
https://www.jencolby.com/many-hats-of-a-teacher-librarian.html                 Teacher Librarians perform many different roles within the school community. But when talking about the role of the Teacher Librarian there is a disconnect between the ideal and reality. Ideally each school would have a full time Teacher Librarian who has a healthy budget for collection curation and management. The Library would be able to function as a true learning commons with technology available and a variety of seating options. It would always be open and available for inquiry, collaboration, drop-ins, and research. In a large enough school, or a high school setting, this may be possible- however, it is not the reality at either of the two elementary schools that I work in. In my role I am split between two schools with ...

LIBE 467: Assign 1- Reference Work Evaluation

LIBE 467: Assignment 1 Evaluation of a Reference Work Andrea Koehn                                    Feb 10, 2023 Introduction                 Geographic sources are an important part of a school library’s reference collection. In an increasingly global society it is necessary to have access to geographic resources. Many students will use the internet or digital sources to find the answers to simple queries, like the location of a country or city. Some will also turn to digital resources for more in-depth research, but there is something interesting and captivating about an atlas and seeing the world in the maps on the pages. Riedling refers to them as “works of art” that “provide aesthetic satisfaction and the opportunity to let one’s i...
